Glue-down vinyl flooring is a favoured option for both homeowners and commercial spaces due to its durability, style, and cost-effectiveness. Whether you’re renovating your home or installing flooring in a high-traffic area, proper installation is crucial for long-lasting performance. In this Glue-Down Flooring Installation Guide, we’ll walk you through each step, ensuring you achieve a professional, seamless finish.

Why Choose Glue-Down Vinyl Flooring?

Before diving into the installation process, let’s explore why glue-down vinyl flooring is a great choice:

  • Durability: Designed to withstand heavy foot traffic, making it ideal for both residential and commercial spaces.
  • Water Resistance: Many glue-down vinyl floors are waterproof, making them suitable for kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Stability: Unlike floating floors, glue-down vinyl flooring adheres directly to the subfloor, reducing movement and enhancing stability.
  • Cost-Effective: Offers the look of natural wood or stone without the high price tag and maintenance concerns.
  • Easy Repairs: Damaged planks or tiles can be replaced individually without disturbing the entire floor.

Step-by-Step Glue-Down Flooring Installation Guide

Follow this step-by-step guide to achieve a smooth, professional-quality glue-down vinyl flooring installation. Make sure to adhere to each step to ensure a flawless finish.

Prepare the Subfloor

A smooth, clean, and dry subfloor is essential for a successful installation. To ensure the entire surface is clean, flat, and free of moisture, follow these steps:

  1. Remove any debris and dust by sweeping and vacuuming thoroughly.
  2. Use a moisture meter to verify that the subfloor is moisture-free and meets the manufacturer’s requirements.
  3. Use a leveler to check for flatness.
  4. If any cracks or holes are present, use a Portland-based self-leveler to fill them and allow it to dry completely.
  5. If the floor slopes upward, use a concrete grinder to level it out.

Before applying the adhesive, coat the subfloor with a primer. This helps encapsulate any existing adhesive residue and ensures a strong bong for the new flooring.

Plan the Layout

To minimise cuts and ensure a smooth installation, measure the area of the room to determine the best layout.

Consider the placement of your guideline carefully, ensuring that the width of the edge rows (first and last rows) are not shorter than 3 inches (7.62cm) on both sides. This will accommodate any wall deviations.

Once you have determined the guideline, set the starting row using a chalk line reel to guide the installation process.

Apply the Adhesive

When applying the adhesive, use a notched trowel to spread it evenly across the subfloor at a 45-degree angle, working in small sections to avoid overlapping.

We recommend using the pressure-sensitive method, which is to allow the adhesive to become tacky to the touch by waiting 45-90 minutes. The adhesive will change colour once it’s ready , which indicates that it’s time to start laying the vinyl planks.

Lay the Vinyl Flooring

Start laying the vinyl planks along the guideline, pressing them firmly into the adhesive. Make sure to follow the guideline carefully to keep the installation square to the room.

It is important to wipe away any excess adhesive immediately to prevent it from staining the planks or becoming difficult to clean later.

Cut and Fit Edges

As you approach the edge of the room, you may need to cut the last plank of each row to size. Continue laying planks row by row until you reach the edge row.

For the edge row:

  • Determine the appropriate width of the planks, and modify them accordingly.
  • Lay the planks for this row on top of the starting row, trace a line across them using a loose piece of flooring, and cut them to fit.
  • Install the planks snugly against the wall, ensuring there are no expansion gaps.

Roll the Floor

Once the installation is complete, use a 75 to 100-pound roller to remove any air bubbles and help secure the flooring. After a few hours, roll the floor again to ensure the adhesive has fully bonded to the subfloor.

Allow for Curing Time

It’s important to avoid walking on the floor for at least 24 hours to allow the adhesive to set properly. Wait a further 48 hours before moving furniture into the space to ensure the flooring is fully secured and won’t be disrupted.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

To ensure a successful installation, be mindful of these common mistakes that can compromise the quality and longevity of your flooring:

  • Skipping Subfloor Preparation: Uneven or dirty subfloors can lead to poor adhesion and early damage.
  • Not Allowing for Proper Edge Rows: The first and last rows should be at least 3” wide to accommodate wall deviations.
  • Applying Too Much or Too Little Adhesive: Follow manufacturer guidelines for the best results.
  • Rushing the Installation: Take your time to ensure precise cutting and positioning.

Post-Installation Care and Maintenance

To keep your glue-down vinyl flooring in top condition, follow these maintenance tips:

Regular Cleaning

Sweep or vacuum daily to remove dirt and debris.

Mop with a Damp Cloth

Use a pH-neutral vinyl floor cleaner and avoid excessive water.

Protect the Surface

Use felt pads under furniture legs and avoid dragging heavy items.

Avoid Harsh Chemicals

Do not use abrasive cleaners or wax-based products.
